Tom Field
Field started his Northeast Ohio career as program director at WHBC / Canton. But he enjoyed the air work and by 1940 he was doing a daily newscast as the “Sohio Reporter”. It was at the company’s request that he changed his named to Tom Field. Like others in “the greatest generation” Field joined the Army where he won acclaim for an original production titled “Call for the Quartermaster Corps”. The Baltimore Sun raved about the show calling it the best musical comedy since Irving Berlin’s “This is the Army”. After the war Field took a position at Cleveland’s WTAM, but television was on the horizon. In 1948 he joined WNBK (later KYW and now WKYC) as Channel 3’s first news anchor, but stayed on the radio side doing double duty at KYW as a staff announcer. He also hosted Channel 3’s nightly program “Good News is a Good Night” and the Sunday public affairs program “The World is Yours”. A decade later, after a brief move to WRCV / Philadelphia, he returned to Cleveland’s WEWS to anchor the 11 p.m. news and stayed there for another ten years. In 1967 Field started doing double duty as the news voice of WDBN-FM / Medina. Field retired in February 1980 to live out his days at his family home in Mahoning County.
